Efficient Adaptive Techniques for Source Coding and A/D Conversion

June 26, 2001

As is known, digital communication systems are designed to t ransmit information in digital form. In TV broadcasting, for example, the source of information is analog. Therefore, the output of the information source need to be transformed into digital form suitable for transmission or storage. This process is performed by source encoding. Source encoders are designed usually to achieve high transmission efficiency. This can be in the form of decreasing the bit rate needed to represent the information while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Source coding is also used (together with channel coding) to improve robustness of the communication system against channel errors. This talk provides an overview of a variety of algorithms that lead to novel techniques for temporal source coding and analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). The new methods feature a powerful tracking performance with high dynamic range and can applied to coding both analog and digital source signals.
