About the UCLA Adaptive Systems Laboratory
[Professor Ali H. Sayed, Electrical Engineering Department, UCLA, CA 90095, USA.]

The Adaptive Systems Laboratory at UCLA fosters a rich interdisciplinary research program on the analysis and design of complex adaptive systems and networks with cognitive and learning abilities.

Emphasis in the laboratory is on the use of solid theoretical foundations in addition to practical considerations in order to pursue solutions that push performance returns to new levels. Members of the laboratory are encouraged to seek a broad training across disciplines, to always question common "wisdom", and to maintain a heightened degree of awareness for fruitful interactions. They are also encouraged to keep a strong level of mathematical sophistication.

Members of the laboratory are engaged in research investigations along several directions including (recent projects):

  • Adaptation and learning (books and videos)
  • Adaptive networks; diffusion strategies (survey article)
  • Information-processing theories. System theory.
  • Machine learning. Signal processing over graphs.
  • Biological networks. Network science.
  • Flocking and swarming behavior.
  • Self-healing circuitry.
  • Detection and estimation theories; statistical signal processing.
  • Signal processing for wireless location (tool).
  • Assessment mechanisms for educational programs (EEweb).

Select videos showing the operation of sophisticated adaptive networks
These networks emulate the behavior of biological networks (such as fish schools) and they are trained using powerful adaptive diffusion strategies developed by our laboratory. These strategies endow networks with real-time learning and cognitive abilities. In these videos, the adaptive agents search together for the food source while avoiding predators and exhibiting self-organized behavior.
